Exposed: The Coco Berthmann Child Sex Slave Hoax

A widely promoted trafficking narrative is subjected to independent scrutiny as records, family testimony, and unanswered questions challenge claims repeated by media outlets and advocacy organizations

For years, Coco Berthmann’s story was embraced by journalists, bloggers, anti-trafficking organizations, and public figures around the world. Her claims of extreme childhood exploitation helped establish her as a prominent survivor advocate and speaker within the anti-trafficking movement.

But how much of the story had actually been verified?

In this investigation, veteran journalist Lynn Packer examines the evidence behind Berthmann’s claims, including records and testimony that were largely ignored by many of those who amplified her narrative. The report also includes statements from Berthmann’s mother, who categorically denies the allegations and presents documentation she says contradicts her daughter’s account.

Beyond the claims themselves, the investigation raises broader questions about verification, media responsibility, and the consequences of repeating extraordinary stories without adequate scrutiny.

At a time when survivor narratives often become the foundation for advocacy campaigns, fundraising efforts, public policy discussions, and media coverage, the importance of evidence and accountability cannot be overstated.

This report examines both.

Editor’s Note: Lynn Packer is an award-winning investigative journalist, legal consultant, and author of “Lying for the Lord: The Paul H. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.

Following his military service, Packer spent 15 years as an investigative reporter for KSL Television News in Salt Lake City and later taught journalism as an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University and the University of Dortmund. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for rigorous reporting, meticulous documentation, and a commitment to pursuing facts wherever they lead.
