Scott Peterson Supporters and his family keep trying to attach the prestigious Innocence Project to his case

For months, Scott Peterson supporters, the Peterson family, and various media outlets have perpetuated the notion that the Innocence Project is handling Scott Peterson’s case. The only problem is, it just simply isn’t true. It appears to be a deliberate attempt by bad faith actors within the true crime community and the Peterson family to lend credibility to Peterson’s case.
In a statement issued on their website, the Innocence Project clarified, “On January 18, 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project filed motions seeking DNA testing and post-conviction discovery on behalf of its client, Scott Peterson. Any and all inquiries about Mr. Peterson’s case should be directed to the Los Angeles Innocence Project, a non-profit organization wholly independent of the Innocence Project.”
It is important to note that the Los Angeles Innocence Project is in no way affiliated with the Innocence Project. The confusion or deliberate misrepresentation of this fact serves only to mislead the public and detract from the legitimate work being done by the Innocence Project. All matters concerning Scott Peterson’s case are managed exclusively by the Los Angeles Innocence Project, which operates independently and not an affiliate of the reputable organization.
About the Innocence Project
The Innocence Project, founded in 1992 by attorneys Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, aims to exonerate individuals wrongfully convicted of crimes through the use of DNA testing. This organization meticulously reexamines biological evidence to provide irrefutable proof of innocence, often freeing people who have spent years or even decades in prison. Their work has highlighted the critical role of DNA technology in rectifying miscarriages of justice.
In addition to leveraging DNA evidence, the Innocence Project offers robust legal representation to those seeking to overturn wrongful convictions. This includes filing motions for post-conviction relief, uncovering new evidence, and advocating for retrials. Their legal efforts address issues such as prosecutorial misconduct, unreliable evidence, and inadequate defense, which are common contributors to wrongful convictions.
The Innocence Project is also dedicated to systemic reform and public education. They advocate for legislative changes to improve forensic science standards, mandate the recording of interrogations, and reform eyewitness identification procedures. Through media campaigns and educational initiatives, they raise public awareness about the prevalence and causes of wrongful convictions, striving to build a more just and equitable criminal justice system.
