A witness observed a bearded “mountain man” moments before James Walton was murdered at the Envoy Inn in Florence, Kentucky
On December 31, 1988, James Walton was working the overnight shift at the Envoy Inn in Florence, Kentucky when he was murdered during what investigators believed was a robbery.
Shortly before the shooting, a hotel guest observed a suspicious man standing near the front desk. The witness described the individual as a white male between 30 and 40 years old, approximately 6’1″ with a heavy build. He reportedly had reddish-brown and gray collar-length hair, a scraggly beard, and was wearing a plaid flannel shirt, jeans, and hunting boots. The witness later described him as having a “Grizzly Adams” or “mountain man” appearance.
The description became one of the most significant witness accounts in the Walton investigation. Although no known photograph of the suspect exists, the witness description has been used to create a composite representation of the individual observed at the hotel shortly before Walton’s murder.
Interest in the description increased after forensic testing linked bullet fragments recovered from Walton to those recovered from the murder of Lois “Evelyn” Wright. The similarities between the crimes, combined with the proximity of the murders to later attacks associated with the I-65 Killer investigation, have led some researchers to examine whether the cases could be connected.
To date, no DNA evidence has publicly linked the Walton murder to Harry Edward Greenwell or the confirmed I-65 Serial Killer cases. Nevertheless, the witness description remains an important piece of evidence and one of the few visual clues available in the unsolved murder of James Walton.

The sketch was provided by a witness who is believed to have interacted with James Walton’s murderer just “moments” prior to his robbery and subsequent execution.
